About Me

I live and work in Maurice, Iowa and it is there where I seek my inspiration. I take a traditional approach to the realism of my subjects. My artistic heroes include my Grandfather (John Vander Stelt, Sr.), Edward Hopper, Thomas Eakins, Grant Wood and Norman Rockwell. I studied art from an early age and come from a family with a creative spirit. My friends, family and small-town surroundings are crucial elements in my work.

Hi John, This is pretty crazy, but I recognized your elevator (Carnes) and had to come into your page to find out where you are from! It is definitely a small world--I live in Spencer. I love the books that tell us we don''t have to travel far and wide to find great subjects for paintings. You proved that absolutely with this painting. I''ve driven by that spot many times but never saw it as a painting like you did. You speak with an eloquent brush! It''s beautiful. Cooper http://karencooperpaintings.com
